Short answer: There’s no set schedule. The EPA recommends cleaning ducts as needed, not routinely. Many homes go several years between cleanings. Have them looked at once a year when your furnace is serviced, and clean them when there’s real buildup, mold, pests or construction dust.

Why there’s no fixed schedule
How fast ducts get dirty depends on the home. The EPA says routine cleaning isn’t needed and that cleaning should be based on what’s actually in the ducts. NADCA, the duct-cleaning trade group, recommends having the system inspected and cleaning it when it needs it. You may see “every 3 to 5 years” online; treat that as a general guide, not a rule.
What makes ducts get dirty faster
- Pets that shed hair and dander.
- Renovations that put drywall dust or sawdust into the system.
- Wood or pellet stoves, common in Vermont homes.
- Smoking indoors.
- Cheap or missing furnace filters, or filters that don’t get changed.
- Moisture, like a damp basement, which can lead to mold.
How to keep ducts cleaner between cleanings
Change your furnace filter on schedule and use the filter your system is rated for. Seal up renovation work and cover the registers while you’re doing drywall. Keep the basement dry. These steps do more to keep ducts clean than cleaning them often.
When to book a cleaning
Book one when you see the signs: dust blowing out of the vents, heavy buildup inside, mold, pests, or after a renovation or moving into a new home. See the signs your ducts need cleaning.
What our cleaning covers
We use a powerful HEPA-filtered vacuum and air-powered agitation tools to pull dust and debris out of your supply lines, return lines and main trunk lines, and we clean the registers and grille covers. The dust ends up in our equipment, not your home, and our crew wears boot covers inside. If your system doesn’t need cleaning yet, we’ll tell you.
