Air Duct Guide

Why Is My House So Dusty? (And Will Duct Cleaning Help?)

Short answer: Most household dust comes from outdoor dirt, pets, fabrics and everyday living, so cleaning the ducts alone usually won’t stop it. The biggest fixes are a good furnace filter changed on schedule, a vacuum with a HEPA filter, and sealing leaky return ducts. Duct cleaning helps when the ducts themselves are full of dust and it blows out of the vents.

Common causes of a dusty house

  • Dirt tracked in from outside, especially in mud season.
  • Pets shedding hair and dander.
  • Fabrics like carpet, bedding, curtains and furniture.
  • Wood and pellet stoves, which add ash and fine particles.
  • A cheap or old furnace filter, or one that doesn’t fit snugly.
  • Leaky return ducts that pull dust from a basement, attic or crawlspace into the system.
  • Renovation dust that got into the system.
  • Dry winter air, which helps dust cling to surfaces with static.

What actually reduces dust

  • Use the best furnace filter your system is rated for, and change it on schedule.
  • Vacuum with a HEPA filter and dust with a damp microfiber cloth instead of a feather duster.
  • Put mats at the doors and take shoes off inside.
  • Keep indoor humidity in a healthy range. The EPA recommends keeping it below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%.
  • Have leaky return ducts sealed by an HVAC contractor.
  • Wash bedding and curtains regularly.

When duct cleaning helps with dust

Duct cleaning makes a difference when the dust is coming from the ducts: you see dust puff out of the registers when the system starts, there’s thick buildup when you pull off a register, or there was a renovation. The EPA notes that much of the dust in ducts sticks to the duct walls and doesn’t necessarily get into your rooms, so a light film of dust in the ducts isn’t the cause. What our duct cleaning covers

We use a powerful HEPA-filtered vacuum and air-powered agitation tools to pull dust and debris out of your supply lines, return lines and main trunk lines, and we clean the registers and grille covers. The dust ends up in our equipment, not your home, and our crew wears boot covers inside. If your ducts aren’t the source of the dust, we’ll tell you.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my house so dusty even when I clean all the time?

Dust keeps coming from outdoor dirt, pets, fabrics and your heating system. A better furnace filter, a HEPA vacuum and sealing leaky return ducts help the most.

Will air duct cleaning reduce dust in my house?

Only if the ducts are full of dust. If dust blows out of the vents or there’s thick buildup inside, cleaning helps. Otherwise, the dust is coming from elsewhere.

Does a furnace filter help with dust?

Yes. Use the best filter your system is rated for and change it on schedule.

Does humidity affect dust?

Very dry air can make dust cling with static. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%.
