Mini Split Guide

Can You Clean a Mini Split Yourself?

Short answer: Yes, you can and should clean the filters and wipe down the front of the head yourself. Deep-cleaning the coil and blower wheel is a different job: it usually means taking the head apart, protecting the electronics and catching the runoff. That’s where a professional cleaning comes in.

Mold and grime buildup inside a dirty mini split head

What you can do yourself

  • Rinse the filters every 2 to 6 weeks while the system is running. Let them dry before putting them back.
  • Wipe the front cover and vanes with a damp cloth.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow, leaves and grass. Efficiency Vermont says to brush snow off with a broom, never a shovel, and to call a pro if debris gets inside.
  • Turn the power off before you open anything.

Where DIY cleaning falls short

The dirt that causes smells and weak airflow sits on the coil and the blower wheel, deep inside the head. Bag kits that hang under the head don’t fit every model and can’t reach all of the wheel. Foaming coil sprays clean the front of the coil but not the wheel. Getting the wheel truly clean usually means taking the head apart.

The risks of cleaning a mini split yourself

  • Wet electronics. The control board sits right beside the coil.
  • Bent coil fins from brushing or a strong spray.
  • Water damage to walls and floors if the runoff isn’t caught.
  • Broken plastic clips and covers, which are easy to snap.
  • Harsh cleaners. Bleach and vinegar can damage parts of the unit. Use a coil detergent made for the job.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean my mini split myself?

You can clean the filters and wipe the cover and vanes. Deep-cleaning the coil and blower wheel usually means taking the head apart, which is best left to a pro.

Do mini split cleaning bag kits work?

They help with the coil, but they don’t fit every model and they can’t reach all of the blower wheel, where most of the buildup is.

Can I use vinegar or bleach to clean my mini split?

We don’t recommend it. Both can damage parts of the unit. Use a coil detergent made for the job.

How long does a professional mini split cleaning take?

It depends on how dirty the heads are and how many you have. Tell us how many heads you have and we’ll give you exact pricing and a time estimate.
